Urinary Calcium (Spot) test is a diagnostic urine test used to measure the concentration of calcium in a single urine sample. Calcium excretion through urine reflects how the body processes and eliminates calcium, which plays a vital role in bone strength, muscle function, nerve signaling, and blood clotting. Measuring urinary calcium helps assess calcium metabolism and kidney handling of calcium without the need for a full 24-hour urine collection.
This test is commonly recommended for patients with suspected kidney stone disease, abnormal serum calcium levels, or metabolic disorders affecting calcium balance. Elevated urinary calcium levels may indicate an increased risk of calcium-based kidney stones, hyperparathyroidism, excessive dietary calcium intake, or certain metabolic conditions. Low urinary calcium levels may be associated with poor calcium absorption, vitamin D deficiency, or renal conservation of calcium. The spot urine calcium test is often used as a screening or follow-up test and may be interpreted alongside serum calcium, creatinine, or calcium-to-creatinine ratio results.
