Total Cholesterol ( BC0122 )

Description

Total Cholesterol (TC) test measures the total amount of cholesterol in your blood. Cholesterol is essential for building cells and producing hormones, but high levels can accumulate in blood vessels and increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. This test reflects both HDL (good) and LDL (bad) cholesterol, providing an overall view of your lipid status and cardiac risk. It is recommended for routine screening, heart risk assessment, and for monitoring patients with diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, or those on cholesterol-lowering treatment.

The test is performed on a serum sample using the CHOD-PAP enzymatic method on a fully automated analyzer. A 9–12 hour fasting sample is preferred, especially when done with a Lipid Profile. Total cholesterol levels below 200 mg/dL are normal, 200–239 mg/dL are borderline high, and 240 mg/dL or above indicate high risk. Patients should avoid fatty meals before testing to ensure accurate results.
