Serum Osmolality is a blood test used to measure the concentration of dissolved particles (osmoles) in the blood, reflecting the body’s fluid and electrolyte balance. It is commonly used to evaluate disorders of water balance, dehydration, overhydration, hyponatremia, hypernatremia, and to investigate causes of altered mental status. Serum osmolality is also helpful in diagnosing conditions such as diabetes insipidus, syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH), and in assessing toxic alcohol ingestion.
