Rheumatoid Factor (Qualitative) is a screening blood test used to detect the presence of rheumatoid factor (RF) antibodies in serum. It is commonly used in the evaluation of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), autoimmune joint disorders, chronic inflammatory diseases, connective tissue disorders, and unexplained joint pain or stiffness. RF is an autoantibody directed against the Fc portion of IgG and is found in many patients with rheumatoid arthritis, although it is not specific and may also be present in other autoimmune diseases, chronic infections, liver disease, and in some healthy older adults. A qualitative RF test usually reports results as Positive / Negative (Reactive / Non-Reactive) and is often performed by latex agglutination or rapid immunoassay methods. It is useful as an initial screening tool and may be followed by RF quantitative testing and Anti-CCP antibodies for improved diagnostic accuracy in suspected rheumatoid arthritis. Reference labs commonly use RF testing to support the diagnosis and prognosis of rheumatoid arthritis.
