Serum Protein Electrophoresis (SPEP) is a specialized laboratory test that separates and measures different types of proteins in the blood based on their electrical charge and size. It identifies major protein fractions including Albumin, Alpha-1 globulin, Alpha-2 globulin, Beta globulin, and Gamma globulin. This test is primarily used to detect monoclonal gammopathies such as multiple myeloma, Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia, and other plasma cell disorders. It also helps evaluate chronic infections, autoimmune diseases, liver disorders, kidney disease, and unexplained elevated total protein levels. SPEP is essential in diagnosing abnormal protein production and immune system disorders.
