The Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA), Total test measures the total amount of PSA, a protein produced by the prostate gland, in the blood. PSA is present in both free and protein-bound forms, and total PSA represents the sum of both. Elevated PSA levels may be associated with prostate cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostatitis, urinary tract infections, or recent prostate manipulation. The test is widely used to aid in the detection, risk assessment, and monitoring of prostate cancer, as well as to evaluate other prostate disorders.
