Platelet Count is a vital hematology test that measures the number of platelets (thrombocytes) present in the blood. Platelets are small, colorless cell fragments produced in the bone marrow from megakaryocytes and play a crucial role in the body’s hemostatic mechanism, which prevents excessive bleeding. When a blood vessel is injured, platelets rapidly gather at the site, adhere to the vessel wall, and form a temporary plug that helps initiate the clotting process. Therefore, maintaining a normal platelet count is essential for proper blood clot formation and vascular integrity.
This test is routinely performed as part of the Complete Blood Count (CBC) and is widely used to evaluate bleeding disorders, clotting abnormalities, and bone marrow function. A low platelet count (thrombocytopenia) may lead to increased risk of bruising, prolonged bleeding, petechiae, gum bleeding, or internal bleeding. Thrombocytopenia is commonly seen in viral infections such as dengue, malaria, and other febrile illnesses, as well as in bone marrow disorders, autoimmune diseases, liver disease, certain medications, and chemotherapy.
On the other hand, a high platelet count (thrombocytosis) may be associated with chronic inflammation, infections, iron deficiency anemia, post-surgical states, or bone marrow proliferative disorders. Elevated platelets can increase the risk of abnormal clot formation, which may lead to complications such as thrombosis, stroke, or heart attack.
