NT-proBNP is a blood test used to measure the level of N-terminal pro–B-type natriuretic peptide, a hormone released by the heart in response to increased wall stress and volume overload. This test is widely used for the diagnosis, risk stratification, and monitoring of heart failure. Elevated NT-proBNP levels help differentiate cardiac from non-cardiac causes of dyspnea and provide prognostic information in patients with acute or chronic heart failure.
