Mucus (CP0072)

Description

Mucus in stool is evaluated during routine stool examination and may indicate intestinal irritation, infection, or inflammation. Small amounts of mucus may be normal; however, excessive mucus, especially when associated with blood or diarrhea, can suggest conditions such as dysentery, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or bacterial infection. Assessment of mucus provides important diagnostic information in gastrointestinal disorders.
