Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin (MCH) is an important red blood cell (RBC) index measured as part of the Complete Blood Count (CBC). It represents the average amount of hemoglobin present in each individual red blood cell. Since hemoglobin is the protein responsible for carrying oxygen from the lungs to body tissues, MCH provides valuable information about the oxygen-carrying capacity of each RBC and helps in understanding the nature of anemia and other hematological conditions.
A low MCH value is commonly seen in iron deficiency anemia and other microcytic hypochromic anemias, where red blood cells contain less hemoglobin than normal, making them pale and less efficient in oxygen transport. Conversely, a high MCH value may be observed in macrocytic anemias associated with vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, liver disease, alcoholism, or certain bone marrow disorders, where red blood cells are larger and contain more hemoglobin than usual.
