Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration (MCHC) is an important red blood cell (RBC) index measured as part of the Complete Blood Count (CBC). It indicates the average concentration of hemoglobin within a given volume of packed red blood cells and reflects how densely hemoglobin is distributed inside the RBCs. Unlike MCH, which measures the amount of hemoglobin per cell, MCHC provides insight into the hemoglobin concentration relative to the cell size, making it highly useful in evaluating the nature and severity of different types of anemia.
A low MCHC value is typically associated with iron deficiency anemia, thalassemia, and other hypochromic anemias, where red blood cells have reduced hemoglobin concentration and appear paler under microscopic examination. A normal MCHC is seen in normocytic normochromic anemia, often linked to acute blood loss or chronic diseases. In contrast, a high MCHC value is relatively uncommon but may be observed in conditions such as hereditary spherocytosis, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, severe burns, or RBC dehydration, where cells are more densely packed with hemoglobin.
