Lead (Blood) (HM0055)

Description

Lead (Blood), also called Blood Lead Level (BLL) or Lead, Whole Blood, is a toxicology screening and monitoring test used to measure the concentration of lead in whole blood to evaluate recent or ongoing lead exposure from environmental, occupational, industrial, household, or accidental sources. This test is commonly used in children, adults, pregnant women, and workers exposed to lead through paint, batteries, ceramics, metal work, plumbing, contaminated dust, soil, water, or industrial chemicals. Blood lead testing is the best and most clinically relevant test for detecting lead exposure, and the result is reported as a blood lead level (BLL) in micrograms per deciliter (µg/dL). The CDC states that any amount of lead in the blood means exposure has occurred, and blood lead testing is the standard method used for both screening and follow-up. For children, CDC notes that a blood lead reference value of 3.5 µg/dL is used to identify children with higher blood lead levels than most U.S. children, while clinical action depends on the measured value and exposure risk. In many laboratories, whole blood collected in a trace-element free EDTA tube is the preferred specimen, and common analytical methods include ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry) or Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS). Labcorp lists Lead, Whole Blood (Adult) with AAS or ICP/MS, whole blood specimen, 1 mL volume, and a 2–4 day turnaround time.
