Description

Ionized Calcium (iCa) is a blood test used to measure the biologically active form of calcium circulating in the blood. Unlike total calcium, ionized calcium reflects the free calcium that is physiologically available for neuromuscular function, cardiac activity, blood coagulation, and bone metabolism. This test is particularly useful in critically ill patients, those with acid–base disorders, kidney disease, parathyroid disorders, or conditions where protein levels are abnormal.
