Immature Platelet Fraction (IPF) (HM0049)

Description

Immature Platelet Fraction (IPF) is an advanced hematology test that measures the percentage of newly produced (reticulated) platelets in the bloodstream. It reflects real-time bone marrow platelet production and is particularly valuable in evaluating thrombocytopenia (low platelet count). A high IPF indicates increased platelet turnover due to peripheral destruction or recovery phase (e.g., immune thrombocytopenia, dengue recovery, post-chemotherapy marrow recovery), whereas a low IPF suggests decreased bone marrow production such as aplastic anemia or marrow suppression. IPF testing is commonly performed using automated hematology analyzers and is interpreted alongside platelet count, peripheral smear, and clinical findings to guide diagnosis and treatment decisions.
