HSV 1 & 2 Quantitative PCR is a molecular diagnostic test used to detect and, when validated by the performing laboratory, quantify Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 (HSV-1) and Herpes Simplex Virus type 2 (HSV-2) DNA in clinical specimens such as whole blood, plasma, serum, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), lesion swabs, or other approved sample types. This test is primarily used to help diagnose active herpes simplex virus infection, differentiate HSV-1 from HSV-2, and support clinical evaluation in disseminated HSV infection, neonatal HSV, immunocompromised patients, CNS infection, encephalitis, meningitis, severe mucocutaneous disease, or selected systemic infections. In many laboratories, HSV PCR is most commonly performed as a real-time PCR qualitative or type-specific detection assay, while some specialty or referral laboratories may validate quantitative viral load reporting for selected specimen types. Results should always be interpreted together with clinical findings, lesion site, sample type, timing of collection, antiviral treatment status, and other laboratory or imaging findings. For CSF, HSV PCR is a critical test in suspected HSV encephalitis / meningitis, while for blood / plasma, testing is most clinically useful in suspected disseminated HSV infection, especially in neonates or immunosuppressed patients. Labcorp’s HSV 1/2 DNA PCR uses real-time PCR, accepts swab, whole blood, serum, or plasma, and typically reports in 2–4 days; their notes specifically state blood/serum/plasma are most useful in disseminated HSV, not for routine mucosal or CNS disease diagnosis.
