HIV ELISA (IO0077)

Description

HIV ELISA is a laboratory blood test used to screen for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection by detecting HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibodies and, in many modern 4th-generation assays, the HIV-1 p24 antigen. It is one of the most widely used screening tests for early and established HIV infection and is recommended as the initial laboratory test in standard HIV diagnostic algorithms. HIV ELISA helps in the early detection of infection, routine health screening, preoperative testing, antenatal screening, blood donor evaluation, occupational exposure assessment, and high-risk exposure follow-up. Reactive results are considered preliminary and require confirmatory testing according to standard HIV testing protocols.

Pre-Test Instructions:

  • No fasting required
Collect blood in plain red-top tube, SST, or gel-barrier tube
Allow blood to clot and separate serum promptly
    Keep specimen refrigerated during transport
Avoid grossly hemolyzed, contaminated, or improperly stored samples
For best early detection, 4th-generation HIV ELISA is preferred over older antibody-only assays
If the screen is reactive, the result is preliminary and confirmatory testing is required as per HIV diagnostic algorithm
If exposure was very recent (<14 days), an HIV RNA test may be more appropriate because antigen/antibody tests may still be in the early window period
Inform the lab/doctor about date of possible exposure, PEP/PrEP use, or recent high-risk exposure for proper interpretation
