Haptoglobin is a blood test used to measure the level of haptoglobin, a plasma protein produced by the liver that binds free hemoglobin released from red blood cells. It is primarily used in the evaluation of hemolytic anemia. Decreased haptoglobin levels suggest increased red cell destruction, while elevated levels may occur in inflammatory conditions, infections, or tissue injury. The test is often interpreted alongside LDH, bilirubin, reticulocyte count, and peripheral smear findings.
