HbA1c (Hemoglobin A1c) Test, also known as the glycosylated hemoglobin test, shows your average blood sugar level over the past 2–3 months. Sugar in the blood attaches to hemoglobin inside red blood cells, and this test measures how much sugar is attached. Since red blood cells live for about three months, this gives a clear picture of long-term blood sugar control, not just the level on the day of the test.
Doctors advise this test to diagnose diabetes and prediabetes and to monitor how well diabetes is controlled. The test is done using a small blood sample and does not require fasting. It is commonly recommended for adults over 40, people who are overweight, or those with a family history of diabetes.
