Epithelial Cells in urine are cells shed from the lining of the urinary tract and detected during urine sediment microscopy. Small numbers are considered normal; however, increased epithelial cells may indicate urinary tract infection, inflammation, kidney disease, or sample contamination. Epithelial cells are classified into squamous, transitional, and renal tubular epithelial cells, each having distinct clinical significance. This parameter is part of routine urine examination (R/E).
