EBV Nuclear Antigen (EBNA) IgG Antibodies (IO0059)

Description

EBV Nuclear Antigen (EBNA) IgG Antibodies is a serological blood test used to detect IgG antibodies against Epstein-Barr Virus Nuclear Antigen (EBNA). This test helps identify past or previous Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) infection and is commonly used in the evaluation of infectious mononucleosis (mono) and EBV serology interpretation. EBNA IgG antibodies usually appear 2–4 months after primary infection and generally remain positive for life, making this test useful for distinguishing past infection from acute or recent EBV infection when interpreted along with VCA IgM and VCA IgG. It is helpful in clinical assessment of unexplained fever, lymphadenopathy, fatigue, and EBV immune status.

Pre-Test Instructions:

  • No fasting required
Collect serum sample in red-top tube or gel barrier tube (SST)
Avoid hemolyzed, lipemic, grossly icteric, or contaminated samples as these may be rejected
Best interpreted together with EBV VCA IgM and EBV VCA IgG for complete EBV serology profile
Early acute infection may be negative, because EBNA IgG usually develops weeks to months after infection
If clinically suspected and result is negative in early illness, doctor may advise repeat testing later or order complete EBV profile
Results should always be correlated with clinical symptoms and other EBV markers
