DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) is a specialized androgen hormone test used to measure the level of dihydrotestosterone in blood, a potent metabolite of testosterone formed by the action of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. DHT plays a major role in male sexual development, androgen-related hair loss, hirsutism, disorders of sexual differentiation (DSD), 5-alpha reductase deficiency, and monitoring of 5-alpha reductase inhibitor therapy such as finasteride or dutasteride. This test is useful in the evaluation of androgen excess, male pattern baldness, female alopecia, hormonal imbalance, virilization, and selected endocrine or reproductive disorders. Labcorp notes that DHT testing may be used in the differential diagnosis of diseases of sexual differentiation, where DHT may be low compared to testosterone in 5-alpha reductase deficiency, and it may also be used to monitor the effectiveness of 5-alpha reductase inhibitor treatment in female alopecia. The test is typically performed on serum or plasma using highly sensitive HPLC-MS/MS / LC-MS/MS methodology, with results generally reported in ng/dL.
