D-Dimer is a blood test used to detect fragments produced when a blood clot breaks down in the body. Normally, D-Dimer levels are very low or undetectable in the bloodstream. Elevated levels indicate that significant clot formation and breakdown may be occurring, making this test extremely useful in evaluating thrombotic disorders.
The D-Dimer test is commonly ordered when conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), or abnormal clotting are suspected. Symptoms that may prompt testing include unexplained swelling or pain in the limbs, sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, rapid heart rate, or unexplained bleeding. A normal D-Dimer result helps rule out serious clotting disorders, while an elevated result indicates the need for further diagnostic evaluation.
