Cytomegalovirus (CMV) IgM Antibody test is a blood test used to detect IgM antibodies produced by the immune system in response to a recent or active CMV infection. Cytomegalovirus is a common virus belonging to the herpesvirus family. While CMV infection is often mild or asymptomatic in healthy individuals, it can cause significant complications in newborns, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems.
The presence of CMV IgM antibodies usually indicates a recent or current infection. This test is especially important in pregnancy, as primary CMV infection during pregnancy can increase the risk of congenital CMV infection in the fetus, potentially leading to hearing loss, developmental delay, or other serious health problems. CMV IgM testing is also commonly used in patients with prolonged fever, unexplained illness, or immunocompromised conditions such as organ transplant recipients or individuals undergoing chemotherapy.
