Cytomegalovirus (CMV) IgG Antibody test is a blood test used to detect IgG antibodies produced by the immune system after exposure to cytomegalovirus. CMV is a common viral infection, and once a person is infected, the virus usually remains dormant in the body for life. The presence of CMV IgG antibodies indicates past infection and immunity rather than a recent or active infection.
This test is especially important in pregnancy planning, prenatal screening, and evaluation of immunocompromised individuals. In pregnant women, CMV IgG testing helps determine whether a previous infection has already occurred, which significantly reduces the risk of primary infection during pregnancy. When interpreted together with CMV IgM results, this test helps distinguish between past exposure, recent infection, or reactivation of the virus.
