Description

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) IgG & IgM Antibodies is a serological blood test panel used to detect both IgG and IgM antibodies against Cytomegalovirus (CMV). This test helps determine prior exposure, recent infection, or active immune response to CMV and is commonly used in pregnancy screening, TORCH profile evaluation, transplant workup, neonatal risk assessment, and immunocompromised patient monitoring. CMV IgG antibodies generally indicate past or previous exposure, while CMV IgM antibodies may suggest recent or current infection, although clinical correlation and follow-up testing may be required for accurate interpretation. This test is valuable in diagnosing and monitoring CMV-related infections and assessing serological status in at-risk individuals.

Pre-Test Instructions:

No fasting required
Collect blood in plain red-top tube, serum separator tube (SST), or gel-barrier tube
Allow blood to clot and separate serum promptly
Avoid hemolyzed, lipemic, grossly icteric, or contaminated samples
CMV IgM alone should not be used to diagnose primary infection, as IgM can persist or appear during reactivation; interpretation should be done with CMV IgG, clinical history, and if needed IgG avidity or repeat testing
If acute infection is suspected, paired sera / repeat testing in 2–14 days may be recommended depending on clinical context
Important in pregnancy, TORCH screening, transplant evaluation, neonatal risk assessment, and immunocompromised patients
