Chlamydia trachomatis Real-Time PCR (MB0016)

Description

Chlamydia trachomatis Real-Time PCR is a highly sensitive molecular diagnostic test used to detect the DNA or nucleic acid of Chlamydia trachomatis, the bacterium that causes one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This test is performed using Real-Time PCR / NAAT (Nucleic Acid Amplification Test) technology and is widely used for the accurate diagnosis of genital, urinary, and certain extragenital chlamydial infections. It is recommended for patients with urethral discharge, cervicitis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), infertility workup, high-risk sexual exposure, STI screening, and partner screening. The test can be performed on first-catch urine, endocervical swab, vaginal swab, urethral swab, and in some cases rectal or pharyngeal swabs, depending on the laboratory protocol. Because it is highly sensitive and specific, Chlamydia trachomatis Real-Time PCR is considered a preferred method for early and reliable detection of chlamydial infection and helps guide prompt treatment and prevention of complications such as infertility and chronic pelvic infection. Labcorp uses nucleic acid amplification (NAA) methodology for chlamydia detection in swab and urine specimens.

Pre-Test Instructions:

  • No fasting required
For urine samples, collect first-catch / first-void urine (initial urine stream), not midstream urine
Patient should not urinate for at least 1 hour before collection for urine or male urethral swab collection
Use only approved molecular transport kits (e.g., Aptima urine transport / Aptima swab transport) for best accuracy
Do not use routine urine culture / chemistry urine sample for chlamydia NAAT unless specifically collected in correct transport system
For swabs, specify exact specimen source (vaginal, endocervical, urethral, rectal, pharyngeal) on the requisition form
Avoid improper transport media, bacterial swabs, expired transport tubes, or delayed transport as these may cause rejection
In women, some labs recommend avoiding collection during menstruation or shortly after, depending on specimen type/protocol
Positive results should be interpreted clinically and may require partner testing/treatment and concurrent STI screening (e.g., gonorrhea)
