Bleeding Time (BT) is a basic haemostasis test used to assess the body’s ability to stop bleeding by evaluating platelet function and capillary integrity. The test measures the time taken for bleeding to stop after a small, controlled skin puncture. Platelets play a crucial role in the initial phase of blood clotting, and abnormalities in platelet number or function can lead to prolonged bleeding.
Bleeding Time testing is commonly recommended in patients with a history of easy bruising, frequent nosebleeds, gum bleeding, prolonged bleeding after minor cuts, or unexplained bleeding episodes. It is also useful in evaluating suspected platelet disorders, certain inherited bleeding conditions, and the effect of medications that interfere with platelet function. The test may be performed before minor surgical or dental procedures to assess bleeding risk.
