ASCA (Anti-Saccharomyces cerevisiae Antibody) IgG is a blood test used to detect IgG antibodies directed against Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a yeast commonly present in food. The presence of ASCA IgG antibodies is strongly associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), particularly Crohn’s disease. This test helps clinicians differentiate Crohn’s disease from ulcerative colitis, as ASCA antibodies are more frequently found in Crohn’s disease patients.
Patients with inflammatory bowel disease often experience chronic abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, weight loss, fatigue, anemia, and intestinal inflammation. ASCA IgG testing is especially useful in individuals with long-standing symptoms or unclear clinical findings. When interpreted alongside ASCA IgA and other autoimmune markers such as p-ANCA, this test improves diagnostic accuracy and supports appropriate disease classification.
ASCA IgG antibodies may indicate immune response related to intestinal inflammation rather than active infection. This test is not intended as a screening tool but serves as an important supportive investigation in suspected autoimmune gastrointestinal disorders. Accurate identification of inflammatory bowel disease allows timely initiation of targeted treatment, helps reduce complications, and improves long-term patient outcomes. ASCA IgG testing is suitable for both adults and children and requires no fasting or special preparation, making it a convenient component of comprehensive IBD evaluation.
