Description

ASCA (Anti-Saccharomyces cerevisiae) IgA is a blood test used to detect IgA class antibodies directed against Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a type of yeast commonly found in food. The presence of these antibodies is closely associated with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), particularly Crohn’s disease. This test helps clinicians differentiate between Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, two conditions that share similar symptoms but require different management approaches.

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease may experience chronic abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, weight loss, fatigue, anemia, and intestinal inflammation. ASCA IgA testing is especially useful when symptoms are longstanding or when the diagnosis is uncertain based on clinical findings and imaging alone.
