ASCA (Anti-Saccharomyces cerevisiae) IgA is a blood test used to detect IgA class antibodies directed against Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a type of yeast commonly found in food. The presence of these antibodies is closely associated with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), particularly Crohn’s disease. This test helps clinicians differentiate between Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, two conditions that share similar symptoms but require different management approaches.
Patients with inflammatory bowel disease may experience chronic abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, weight loss, fatigue, anemia, and intestinal inflammation. ASCA IgA testing is especially useful when symptoms are longstanding or when the diagnosis is uncertain based on clinical findings and imaging alone. A positive ASCA IgA result supports the likelihood of Crohn’s disease, particularly when interpreted alongside ASCA IgG and other markers such as p-ANCA.
ASCA IgA testing is not used as a general screening test but serves as an important supportive tool in the diagnostic evaluation of gastrointestinal autoimmune disorders. It may also assist in assessing disease patterns and guiding further investigations. Early and accurate differentiation of inflammatory bowel disease helps in initiating appropriate treatment, reducing complications, and improving long-term patient outcomes. This test is suitable for both adults and children and does not require fasting or special preparation, making it a convenient component of autoimmune and gastrointestinal diagnostic workups.
