Apolipoprotein B (Apo B) test measures the main protein component of atherogenic lipoproteins such as LDL, VLDL, and IDL. Each of these particles contains one Apo B molecule, making Apo B a direct indicator of the total number of atherogenic particles responsible for plaque formation in arteries. Elevated Apo B levels are strongly associated with atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, and increased cardiovascular risk.
Apo B provides a more accurate assessment of cardiac risk than LDL cholesterol alone, especially in patients with diabetes, metabolic syndrome, or normal LDL-C but high particle numbers. When interpreted with Apo A1 and the Apo B/Apo A1 ratio, this test offers precise cardiovascular risk stratification.
