Antithrombin III (AT III) test measures the activity or level of antithrombin, a natural anticoagulant that inhibits thrombin and factor Xa in the coagulation cascade. Reduced AT III levels are associated with an increased risk of venous thrombosis, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism, and inherited or acquired thrombophilia.
This test is crucial in the evaluation of unexplained or recurrent clotting events, heparin resistance, liver disease, nephrotic syndrome, and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Commonly performed by a chromogenic functional assay, AT III testing helps clinicians diagnose clotting disorders and plan appropriate anticoagulant therapy.
