Anti-Smooth Muscle Antibody (ASMA), IFA ( IO0037 )

Description

ASMA (Anti–Smooth Muscle Antibody) – IFA is a specialized autoimmune serology test used in the evaluation of autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) and other immune-mediated liver disorders. This assay detects circulating antibodies directed against components of smooth muscle, primarily actin filaments, using the highly sensitive Indirect Immunofluorescence Assay (IFA) technique. In clinical practice, ASMA positivity is strongly associated with Type 1 Autoimmune Hepatitis and supports diagnosis when correlated with liver function tests, clinical findings, and other autoantibodies such as ANA and LKM. The IFA method allows visualization of specific fluorescence patterns on substrate tissues, improving diagnostic reliability and specificity.

ASMA testing is recommended for patients presenting with unexplained elevation of liver enzymes, chronic hepatitis, jaundice of unknown origin, or suspected autoimmune liver disease. Early identification of ASMA antibodies helps clinicians initiate timely immunosuppressive therapy and prevent progression to cirrhosis. This test is also valuable in differentiating autoimmune hepatitis from viral hepatitis and other chronic liver conditions. The ASMA – IFA test is a critical marker in autoimmune liver disease panels and plays an essential role in comprehensive hepatic autoimmune profiling.
