The Anti-PR3 Antibodies (c-ANCA) test is a blood test used to detect antibodies directed against proteinase-3 (PR3), an enzyme found in certain white blood cells. These antibodies are commonly associated with autoimmune vasculitis, particularly Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (formerly known as Wegener’s granulomatosis). Vasculitis is a condition in which blood vessels become inflamed, leading to reduced blood flow and potential damage to vital organs.
This test is primarily ordered when a patient presents with symptoms suggestive of systemic vasculitis, such as persistent sinus inflammation, nasal ulcers, chronic cough, shortness of breath, unexplained kidney problems, skin rashes, joint pain, fatigue, or unexplained weight loss. Detection of Anti-PR3 antibodies helps support the diagnosis of c-ANCA–associated vasculitis and aids in differentiating it from other autoimmune or inflammatory disorders.
