Anti-Mitochondrial Antibody (AMA) ( IA0022 )

Description

Anti-Mitochondrial Antibody (AMA) test detects autoantibodies directed against mitochondrial antigens and is a key marker for primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), an autoimmune cholestatic liver disease affecting small intrahepatic bile ducts. AMA is present in a high percentage of PBC patients and supports early diagnosis, even before significant liver enzyme abnormalities appear.

This test is valuable in patients with unexplained cholestasis, elevated alkaline phosphatase, pruritus, fatigue, or suspected autoimmune liver disease. Performed commonly by indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) or immunoassay, AMA results, along with liver function tests and clinical findings, help clinicians confirm diagnosis and monitor disease progression.
