The Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) test measures the level of ACE in serum and is primarily used in the evaluation and monitoring of sarcoidosis, a granulomatous inflammatory disease that commonly affects the lungs and lymph nodes. ACE is produced by endothelial and epithelial cells, and elevated levels are frequently associated with active sarcoidosis due to increased granuloma formation.
This test supports diagnosis, assesses disease activity, and monitors response to therapy in sarcoidosis. ACE levels may also be altered in other granulomatous disorders, tuberculosis, leprosy, and certain liver diseases. When interpreted alongside clinical findings, imaging, and other laboratory parameters, serum ACE provides valuable insight into granulomatous disease activity.
