AFP is an oncofetal glycoprotein produced by the fetal liver and yolk sac. In adults, elevated AFP is mainly associated with hepatocellular carcinoma and non-seminomatous germ cell tumors. It is also used in maternal screening during pregnancy.
Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) measured by immunoassay is a key tumor marker for hepatocellular carcinoma and non-seminomatous germ cell tumors, and a maternal screening marker in pregnancy. Serial AFP trends with imaging help assess tumor burden, treatment response, and recurrence in clinical practice.
