AFB Stain is a rapid microscopic method to detect acid-fast bacilli in clinical samples, primarily for presumptive diagnosis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The mycolic-acid–rich cell wall retains stain despite acid-alcohol decolorization.
Acid Fast Bacilli (AFB) Stain by Ziehl–Neelsen or fluorescent method rapidly detects mycolic-acid–rich bacilli in sputum and body fluids for presumptive tuberculosis diagnosis. Graded smear results indicate bacillary load and infectivity, guiding further testing with culture or molecular assays.
