Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH) is a vital peptide hormone produced by the anterior pituitary gland that plays a central role in regulating the body’s response to stress and maintaining hormonal balance through the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis. ACTH stimulates the adrenal cortex to produce and release cortisol, a glucocorticoid hormone essential for metabolism, immune response modulation, blood pressure regulation, and stress adaptation.
Measurement of ACTH levels in blood is crucial for diagnosing and differentiating disorders related to adrenal and pituitary gland function. This test is primarily used in the evaluation of conditions such as Cushing’s syndrome, Addison’s disease (primary adrenal insufficiency), secondary adrenal insufficiency, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, and ACTH-secreting tumors. Elevated ACTH levels may indicate primary adrenal failure where the pituitary attempts to compensate for low cortisol production, while low ACTH levels may suggest pituitary dysfunction or cortisol-producing adrenal tumors.
