Absolute Neutrophils Count (ANC) is a vital hematological parameter that measures the exact number of neutrophils present in peripheral blood. Neutrophils are the most abundant type of white blood cells and serve as the body’s first line of defense against bacterial and fungal infections. These cells are produced in the bone marrow and rapidly migrate to sites of infection or inflammation where they engulf and destroy invading microorganisms through a process called phagocytosis.
A low ANC, known as neutropenia, significantly increases the risk of infections and may be seen in conditions such as viral infections, bone marrow suppression, autoimmune diseases, severe nutritional deficiencies, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or certain medications. Severe neutropenia is considered a medical emergency due to the high risk of life-threatening infections.
An elevated ANC may be observed in acute bacterial infections, inflammatory conditions, physical stress, smoking, or corticosteroid use. Monitoring ANC is especially important in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, transplant recipients, and individuals on immunosuppressive therapy, as it helps clinicians decide on treatment continuation, infection prevention measures, and hospitalization needs.
