The Absolute Basophil Count (ABC) test measures the exact number of basophils, a type of white blood cell (WBC), circulating in your blood. Basophils are part of the body's immune system and play an important role in allergic reactions, inflammatory responses, and defense against certain infections. They contain granules rich in histamine, heparin, and other chemical mediators that are released during allergic and immune responses.
Unlike the basophil percentage reported in a Complete Blood Count (CBC), the Absolute Basophil Count provides the actual number of basophils per unit volume of blood. This offers a more accurate assessment of basophil levels, particularly when the total white blood cell count is abnormal.
An elevated Absolute Basophil Count (basophilia) may be associated with allergic disorders, chronic inflammation, hypothyroidism, chronic infections, autoimmune diseases, myeloproliferative neoplasms such as chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), and certain bone marrow disorders. A decreased basophil count (basopenia) may occur during acute infections, severe allergic reactions, hyperthyroidism, stress, pregnancy, or after corticosteroid therapy.
The test is performed using an automated hematology analyzer (automated cell counter) on an EDTA whole blood sample. Results are interpreted together with the Complete Blood Count (CBC), Differential Leukocyte Count (DLC), clinical history, and other laboratory findings to help evaluate immune function and hematological conditions.
